PEOPLE SHOW RESPECT FOR THEIR ENVIRONMENT

Officers from Newham’s Respect campaign took to the streets of Beckton on Monday to discover what residents thought of their environment.

More than 220 homes were visited in the Winsor Park area to find out what issues people were pleased or concerned about.

Respect is a partnership between Newham Council, the police, fire brigade, schools, businesses and community and voluntary agencies to curb crime and anti-social behaviour in Newham.

Newham’s Mayor, Sir Robin Wales, said: “Each week officers patrol the streets of Respect areas to report environmental issues. This exercise took that one step further with them meeting residents first hand to find out what matters to them.

One such resident was Beckton Ward Councillor, Ayesha Chowdhury, who said: "Giving residents the opportunity to meet the officers and discuss in person matters that affect them is important. I was pleased to see the Respect team building relationships within the community."

In the past residents have had the opportunity to meet officers during visits by the Respect mobile office and also at various community events including Community Forum meetings.

Since Respect was launched in the Winsor Park area in May 2003, residents around Pennyroyal Avenue, Winsor Terrace and Angelica Drive have reported noticing a difference.

The campaign team has been working with employment and training agency Groundwork to clean up overgrown areas which previously had hidden acts of anti-social behaviour.

Respect has also been in partnership with community groups throughout all Respect areas to ensure that the message of saying no to crime and anti-social behaviour reaches everyone.
